Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust currently operate two stroke wards, which provide acute stroke care and stroke rehabilitation, at both Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells hospitals. As a result of recruitment challenges in their thrombolysis service and high levels of specialist nursing vacancies on the stroke ward at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, from September 2019 the Trust will temporarily move the stroke ward at Tunbridge Wells to Maidstone Hospital.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust have introduced the temporary change so that they can maintain a safe service for patients.

This temporary move is not part of the wider Kent and Medway Stroke Services Review, and the current stroke unit at Maidstone hospital is not a hyper acute stroke unit (HASU). The HASU development will come later once detailed implementation plans have been agreed and following the outcome of the judicial reviews and referral to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.
